It was so hard to choose a picture today! And I thought the day was going to end without any inspiration. I liked this photo the best, and really, it was no accident. I think I shot about 20 photos in the end of the cat drinking water. It helped that she seemed to be really thirsty and kept drinking while I was taking photos.
Other photos in the running include the song I've listened to way too many times. But it's for a good cause! I teach a ballet class for adults and I have to choreograph a dance for the end of year concert.
After class finished, my friend and I went out for a hot chocolate, gossip mags and a movie (Step Up, to keep in theme with the dancing). It's been a long day and I'm not entirely sure why I'm still up typing. Except that I've committed myself to posting a picture a day for a year. At least. 5 days is a good start, right?

What do you collect?
I do my best not to collect, but that just conflicts with my pack-rat urges. Still, the urge to be able to walk through my home is even stronger... I say that while I look around my room, filled with old novels and little boxes. Okay, okay, it's hard for me to resist those cute little boxes. I don't know why, but they are just so cute! I used to collect books, but they are way too expensive for me to consume them the way I used to in school. For one thing, I don't have the money. For the other, I don't have the time to read a book a day. Sheesh, no wonder I never did any homework!!
So, in a conscious effort to save money and space, I try to keep my collecting in a virtual dimension. Nowadays, the thing I collect the most is music. New stuff, old stuff, cool stuff, nerdy stuff, I'm a little music whore. :D A lot of music I love for the rhythm, for the way it makes me want to move. Other music is strictly for singing at the top of my lungs in the car (by myself, I don't dare inflict this on innocent lives). But the best music is the music I love for the lyrics and the melody together. When the lyrics work, they evoke a memory or a moment that is deeply personal. (After all, my version may be unique in its detail, but the universal nature of the emotion isn't.) One of my fave examples of this would have to be School Night by Ani Difranco. This song has two parts for me. There's the situation (the narrator is breaking up with someone)
she went over to his apartment
clutching her decision
and he said, did you come here to tell me goodbye?
so she built a skyscraper of procrastination
and then she leaned out the twenty-fifth floor window
of her reply
and she felt like an actress
just reading her lines
when she finally said
yes. it's really goodbye this time
and far below was the blacktop
and the tiny toy cars
and it all fell so fast
and it all fell so far
and then there's a more abstract moment, wondering if there is a way to give love a measurable quantity.
but then what kind of scale
compares the weight of two beauties
the gravity of duties
or the ground speed of joy?
tell me what kind of gauge
can quantify elation?
what kind of equation
could i possibly employ?
So yeah. I like music. A lot. And little boxes. And books.
Haha! I get an exciting first blog entry! And the exciting thing is, as referred to in the title of this entry, Mr. A-Z in the flesh! Yes, got to see him tonight at the Prince of Wales... well, I kinda got to see him. I must be getting old, but seeing a gig in a smoky, crowded, POLE-FILLED, black-walled room isn't ideal for me now. I couldn't see the guy at all for the first 20 minutes and spent the rest of the show tilting my head from side to side as I tried to peek through all the moving heads and the GIANT POLE. Isn't it time we developed the technology to building rooms that didn't require POLES???
Okay, now I'm just whinging.
It was fun to hear all the songs, plus many I didn't recognise. Of course, I've only known about Jason Mraz for maybe 5 months. And he has a lot of lyrics. A lot.
I think the best part of the live show is all the talking in between. Funny, irreverant and self-aware, this show appeals to the geek in me.
Plus, there was the best encore I have ever witnessed. Jason and the band members came back on stage (after a appreciative 5-7 minutes of clapping and noise) with another person. This guy (Paul, I think) was introduced as somone Jason had met in the toilet. He claimed that he noticed his "shaking" had good rhythm and invited him to join the band on stage and play tambourine-type instrument. "Since I can't invite the whole audience on stage, Paul is going to represent your spirit." Something to that effect. So they start singing this song about love (what pop song isn't about love?) and a couple minutes in, Paul starts singing his own verse, Jason steps back. We're confused, what? And then we realise, it's a marriage proposal.
Awesome.
And that's all I got. :) (oh yeah, she said "yes.")
Check out this guy I've been raving about:
